EFFECT OF PROBIOTIC TREATMENT ON THE MICROBIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY OF UKRAINIAN TYPICAL BLACK SOIL

The search for novel substances that promote the establishment of a microbial community and facilitate optimal humification processes while increasing soil organic matter content offers an opportunity for land restoration. The objective of study was to determine the abundance of ecological and trophic groups of soil microorganisms and the intensity of microbiological processes when subjected to probiotic treatment at various concentrations and doses in typical black soil. The eco-trophic groups of soil microorganisms were identified by inoculating dilutions of soil suspensions onto selective nutrient media. The direction and intensity of soil microbiological processes were assessed using the mineralization-immobilization, oligotrophy, and pedotrophy indexes. The results demonstrate that probiotics has a positive impact on the microbiological activity of the soil, leading to an increase in the number of ecological and trophic groups of soil microorganisms during both spring and autumn seasons. Notably, a significant effect on the soil microorganism conditions was observed after 30 days of probiotic treatment. Probiotics exhibit a favorable influence on microbiological processes within the soil, fostering conducive conditions for the development of soil microorganisms and the formation of humus. The most effective concentration of probiotics for promoting the functionality of microbial communities in black soils is determined to be 10%, accompanied by a dose of 100 l ha-1. Consequently, the application of probiotic treatment at a concentration of 10% and a dose of 100 l/ha-1 holds the potential to enhance the biological state of the soil, restore soil microbial diversity, and serve as an environmentally safe fertilizer.

Challenges in Sustainable Agriculture—The Role of Organic Amendments

Soil degradation threatens global food security and environmental sustainability, necessitating effective soil management strategies. This review comprehensively examines the impact of organic soil amendments on soil quality and productivity across various soil types and climatic conditions. A review of significant research related to organic amendments was performed using encompassed data from online search engines for studies published up until 31 December 2023. Despite their heterogeneity and use of varying methodologies, the data were narratively synthesized, providing a comprehensive understanding of amendment-induced changes in the chemical and physical properties of soil and the effectiveness of restoration on soil degradation. Organic amendments, including compost, vermicompost, biochar, and pomace, are pivotal in enhancing soil quality by increasing soil organic matter content, fostering aggregate formation, and improving soil structure in the short term. They positively influence water retention capacity, pH levels, nutrient availability, and carbon sequestration. In several studies, amendment-induced changes were absent, indicating that the effects of amendments vary depending on soil texture, application rates, and cropping systems, which emphasizes the need for tailored, sustainable soil management practices. This study concludes that organic amendments are a promising option for structure improvement and organic matter accumulation. It further suggests that an approach that integrates various methods is essential in order to meet desirable soil quality and retain agricultural productivity and offers valuable insights and recommendations for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers. Organic amendments can improve soil ecosystem services and contribute to climate change adaptation. In the future, more attention should be directed to tillage management and soil amendment interaction, as well as their effectiveness over specific periods of time.

Nutrient supplementation changes chemical composition of soil organic matter density fractions in desert steppe soil in northern China

The influence of reactive nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) supplementation on ecosystem dynamics of soil organic matter (SOM) shows extensive variations. The underlying mechanisms of regulation of the chemical composition and dynamics of different SOM density fractions (DFs) in aggregates in a desert steppe by N and P supplementation are unclear. Here, the chemical composition and organic carbon (C) and N dynamics of various SOM DFs under N and P addition were assessed. Surface soil samples taken at 0–10 cm depth were obtained from 4-year (2017–2021) experiments under four conditions, namely N treatment, P treatment, combined N and P treatment (NP), and no nutrient supplementation (CK), in a desert steppe located in northern China. Nutrient supplementation significantly increased (P < 0.05) SOM content by 8.89–35.4%; however, the total N content remained constant. N addition mainly increased SOM content in the macroaggregates (>0.25 mm), while P enhanced SOM in microaggregates (0.25–0.053 mm) and silt-clay (<0.053 mm). The fine particulate organic matter (fPOM) proportion was increased significantly (P < 0.05) by 18.4% and 16.4% in macro- and microaggregates under N addition, respectively; P addition mainly enhanced mineral-associated SOM (mSOM) proportion in aggregates. N supplementation remarkably enhanced (P < 0.05) fPOM’s organic C content by 27.3% and 32.0%, and N content by 40.9% and 145.7% in macro- and microaggregates, respectively. Single N and P addition promoted the enrichment of labile and resistant organic components in light fraction (LF), respectively. N promoted the enrichment of stable organic components in the mSOM of microaggregates. Nutrient inputs drive mSOM formation through the interaction of carboxyl-C and mineral surface. Based on a stronger δ13C and δ15N signal, N addition enhanced SOM decomposition in aggregates. Nutrient supplementation promoted SOM accumulation through the formation of more stable old C in POM and silt-clay. Our findings suggest that SOM accumulation in desert steppe probably increases following nutrient addition, but the mechanism is different through which N or P enrichment affects soil dynamics and chemical composition of SOM DFs in desert steppe.

Biocrusts affect preferential flow and water holding capacity by regulating soil properties in Ultisols from subtropical China

Biological soil crusts (BSCs) play an important role in regulating the process of soil infiltration, and thus changing soil hydrological processes. However, little attention was paid to the effects of BSCs on soil infiltration and water holding capacity in the humid region. Therefore, the objective of this study was to quantitatively characterize the flow pathways of BSCs on soils developed over Quaternary clay and muddy shale from subtropical China by using dye tracer experiments. To determine the effects of BSCs on soil water holding capacity, the soil water characteristic curve (SWCC) was also measured. Results showed that BSCs significantly reduced the soil water infiltration compared with the bare soil. The dyeing coverage (DC) of BSCs on Quaternary clay and muddy shale decreased by 8.4% and 1.8%, respectively. SWCC results showed that the water content of BSCs was 3.5%–42.8% higher than that of bare soil under the same matrix potential, indicating that BSCs increased the water holding capacity. BSCs affected preferential infiltration by regulating surface soil properties, such as increased soil organic matter content (SOM), silt and clay content, and decreased bulk density (BD) and sand content. Furthermore, PLS-PM results revealed that BSCs and its induced increase of silt and clay content played important roles in inhibiting preferential infiltration. The results could help us to better understand the effects of BSCs on soil hydrological processes in Ultisols from subtropical China.

Lead bioaccessibility and commonly measured soil characteristics in Detroit, Michigan

Historical and contemporary use of lead (Pb) in gasoline, paints, and industry have led to its concentration in urban soils, presenting a human health risk, with disproportionate impacts on children living in urban areas. Contaminated soil is one of the major contributors to child Pb exposure. While many residents practicing urban agriculture have their soil tested to determine the amount of soil total Pb present, this measure does not provide a direct indicator of soil Pb bioaccessibility (used to predict bioavailability). Because bioavailability is ultimately necessary to determine the exposure risk, we aimed to gain a more refined understanding of Pb risk using measurements commonly performed as part of typical agricultural soil tests. Accordingly, we sampled soils from 142 residential parcels located in Detroit, MI. Soils were evaluated for: pH, organic matter content, cation exchange capacity, phosphorus, sulfur, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and sodium and total and in-vitro bioaccessible (IVBA) Pb. Detroit soil IVBA Pb ranged from 4.5% to 81%, with a mean of 39%. Total Pb, organic matter (OM) content and soil pH were found to be the most important predictors of Pb bioaccessibility. Soils typically had a relatively low OM content (mean of 5%) however, samples with higher OM content had lower IVBA (e.g., the IVBA was 15.2% smaller in soils with 7.5% OM). Soils were typically slightly basic (mean of 7.8); however, samples with pH closer to neutral had lower IVBA (e.g., the IVBA was 11.6% smaller in soils with a pH of 7.3). The proximity of soil sampling locations to former smelter locations was also found to influence Pb bioaccessibility, with samples closer to former Pb smelter sites having a somewhat higher average IVBA. Results suggest increasing soil OM content in urban soils will reduce Pb bioaccessibility. Building soil OM would therefore improve both soil fertility and decrease soil Pb bioaccessibility, imparting a predicted decrease in exposure risks.

[Effects of Different Modifiers on Aggregates and Organic Carbon in Acidic Purple Soil].

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of different modifiers on the changes in aggregates and organic carbon in acidic purple soil， providing a scientific basis for the remediation of acidic purple soil. Using purple soil as the research object， a total of six treatments were set up， including no fertilization （CK）， single fertilization （F）， fertilization with lime （SF）， fertilization with organic fertilizer （OM）， fertilization with biochar （BF）， and fertilization with distiller's grains ash （JZ）. We compared the composition of aggregates in acidic purple soil under the application of different modifiers， as well as the distribution pattern of organic carbon in aggregates of different particle sizes. Combined with the stability indicators of aggregates， we sought to clarify the impact of different modifiers on the structure of aggregates in acidic purple soil. The results showed that fertilization significantly increased the soil pH， with the JZ treatment being the most effective. Fertilization significantly increased soil organic matter content， with the OM treatment showing the largest increase. The BF and OM treatments significantly reduced soil bulk density， whereas the SF and BF treatments significantly increased soil moisture content （P &lt; 0.05）. All treatments used &lt; 0.25 mm aggregates as the dominant particle size. Fertilization could significantly increase the content of large aggregates （aggregate structure units with diameter &gt; 0.25 mm）. At the same time， fertilization treatments significantly increased the soil geometric mean diameter （GMD）， average weight diameter （MWD）， and R0.25 value （ &gt; 0.25 mm aggregate content） and reduced the fractal cone number （D） and aggregate destruction rate （PAD） values （P &lt; 0.05）. Fertilization also promoted the aggregation and stability of soil aggregates， with the OM treatment having the greatest effect. Compared with that in the CK treatment， fertilization could significantly increase soil organic carbon content by 31.71%-209.67%， with the OM treatment showing the most significant change. Different treatments of soil organic carbon were mainly distributed in large aggregates. Compared with that in the CK treatment， each treatment significantly increased the contribution rate of organic carbon in large aggregates by 19.34%-47.76%， with the OM treatment having the most significant effect （P &lt; 0.05）. In general， chemical fertilizer combined with organic fertilizer could promote the formation of large aggregates in acidic purple soil， improve the stability of soil aggregates， and increase the content of soil organic carbon， which is an effective measure to improve the soil structure and improve the quality of acidic purple soil.

[Effects of different fertilization patterns on soil improvement and vegetation restoration of desertified grassland in northwest Liaoning Province, China].

Improving soil fertility is one of the key approaches for ecological restoration of the wind-sand area in northwest Liaoning Province. Taking wind-sand area in northwest Liaoning Province as test object, we conducted a fertilization experiment with treatments of inorganic fertilizer (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers), organic fertilizer, combined application of organic and inorganic fertilizers, and organic fertilizer combined with a biologically organic matrix (γ-polyglutamic acid), and no fertilizer as control. We measured soil organic matter content and extractable cations concentrations, vegetation coverage, and biomass under different fertilization treatments and determine the suitable fertilization mode. The results showed that compared to the control, inorganic fertilizer rapidly increased vegetation coverage and biomass, but high levels of inorganic fertilizer (150 kg N·hm-2) led to soil acidification and Ca2+ leaching. Organic fertilizer increased soil organic matter content, exchangeable K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ contents, as well as coverage and biomass vegetation, especially combined with γ-polyglutamic acid. Overall, the combination of low levels of inorganic fertilizer (50 kg N·hm-2) and moderate levels of organic fertilizer (30000 kg·hm-2) was the best fertilization practice for the rapid and stable restoration of grassland in wind-sand area. Moreover, the extra addition of γ-polyglutamic acid (60 kg·hm-2)could effectively improve soil fertility.

Nitrogen retention capacity of paddy soil improved under long-term garlic-rice rotation

ABSTRACT Although significant differences in soil nitrogen levels exist under different paddy-upland rotations, the main reason for this is unclear. The nitrogen retention capacity and loss of ammonia volatilisation, leaching, etc. of paddy soil with large differences in nitrogen levels from two long-term rotations, garlic-rice and wheat-rice, were measured using the soil column simulation method. The results showed that the loss rate of leaching was only 5.4%, whereas that of ammonia volatilisation was up to 22.8%, which was the main nitrogen loss way of paddy soil under the two rotations. The average ammonia volatilisation rates under wheat-rice rotation with high and low nitrogen application rates were 12.1% and 40.2% higher than that under garlic-rice rotation, leading to a decrease in the total nitrogen loss amount and rate through ammonia volatilisation by 29.8% and 8.8%, respectively. As a result, nitrogen retention in the soil under garlic-rice rotation increased by 12.7%. In conclusion, the long-term garlic-rice rotation could significantly inhibit ammonia volatilisation, thus improving the soil nitrogen retention capacity. The straw return may increase soil organic matter content, reduce ammonia volatilisation loss, and enhance soil nitrogen retention capacity and productivity.

Evaluating the Crucial Relationships between Soil Health and Climate Change

Content of paper emphasizes the significant influence of soil health on global warming and climate stability. Soil affects the Earth's carbon cycle by acting as a source and sink of greenhouse gases. Climate is considered important a factor in soil formation, but also soils also have an impact on the climate. Therefore, soils are affected by the current climate change as well, particularly because they may release excessive amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases (GHG) as a result of changing their usage or poor management or human wrong practices. The pressure that climate change places on soil ecosystems has a significant impact on agriculture, biodiversity, and ecosystem services. For effective climate mitigation and adaptation policies to be developed, it is essential to understand these relationships. Worthwhile that the greatest soil management practices for reducing climate change focus on increasing soil organic matter content and water retention. The enormous carbon and nitrogen (N) store that is soil. acting as a possible regulator of the CO2, N2O, and CH4—the three main greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Because biota is the organic matter carrier to the soil, both in living organisms and through their decomposing remains, mature soils rich in life are frequently CO2 sinks. But heterotrophic organisms that live in soil are also OM net consumers, and they release CO2 into the atmosphere through respiration. The interactions between plants, soil organisms, and abiotic soil conditions are actually changing as a result of climate change, which has an impact on plant performance, plant diversity, and community structure. The loss of soil organic matter (OM) and its development to the atmosphere quickly became a significant effect of tillage and any other activity, agricultural or otherwise, that disturbs the natural soils since then. It is anticipated that the areas affected by salinization would increase due to climate change which affects the suitability of the soil agriculture or any other development purposes.The conclusion of the current study Carbon sequestration can reduced the green house gas emission.

Comparative analysis of different bio-organic fertilizers on growth and rhizosphere environment of grapevine seedlings

Grapevine seedlings need to absorb a lot of nutrients from the soil during the growth process, and appropriate fertilizer can greatly promote the growth of seedlings. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of different bio-organic fertilizers (BOF) on shoot and root growth, soil biochemical characteristics, and bacterial communities of ‘Shine Muscat’ and ‘Kyoho’ seedlings. Four treatments were established: no fertilizer (CK), chemical fertilizer + organic fertilizer (T1), chemical fertilizer + bio-organic fertilizer 1 (T2, containing Bacillus amyloliquefaciens), chemical fertilizer + bio-organic fertilizer 2 (T3, containing Trichoderma). The results showed that BOF had better effects on growth and rhizosphere environment of grapevine seedling than organic fertilizer (OF) treated group. The shoot growth, chlorophyll content, and root growth with BOF of grapevine seedlings were generally better than those treated with OF. Compared with T1, T2 and T3 made grapevine seedlings meet the fixed drying requirement (main shoot 0.8 m) 1–4 weeks earlier. The expansion of roots and the improvement of root activity under BOF treatment were also beneficial to plant growth. Moreover, transcriptome analysis showed that BOF enhanced the phytohormones and cell wall processes in grapevine root, and up-regulated the expression of cell wall-related genes such as XTH23, EXPs, PME17, and auxin related genes such as ABCBs and GH3. In addition, BOF increased soil organic matter content, available nitrogen, available potassium, available phosphorus, and enzyme activity (soil catalase, urease, sucrase, and nitrate reductase). The Shannon and Chao values of T2 were higher than those of T1 and CK, which improved the diversity and richness of soil microbial community. As compared to CK, T2 treatment increased the symbiotic nitrogen fixing Proteobacteria by 4.10 %, and reduced Acidobacteria by 9.79 %. Actinobacteria, which is related to the degradation of stubborn polymers, was the dominant group in T2 treatment, accounting for 10.17 %. As compared to CK and T1, Actinobacteria was increased by 6.89 % and 5.66 %. In summary, BOF could promote the growth of grapevine seedlings by improving phenotypic traits, soil fertility, bacterial diversity, richness abundance, and provide theoretical and technical support for grapevine garden construction and tree management.

Returning ryegrass to continuous cropping soil improves soil nutrients and soil microbiome, producing good-quality flue-cured tobacco.

The widespread and continuous cultivation of tobacco has led to soil degradation and reduced crop yields and quality. Green manure is an essential organic fertilizer that alleviates obstacles to continuous cultivation. However, the plant-soil microecological effects of green manure on flue-cured tobacco cultivation remain unclear. Thus, a positioning trail including two treatments, chemical fertilizer application only (treatment NPK) and chemical fertilizer application with turning ryegrass (treatment NPKG) was conducted, and the effect of ryegrass returning on the soil physicochemical properties, soil microbiome, crop yield, and quality of flue-cured tobacco in continuous cropping soil were investigated. Results showed that returning ryegrass to the field increased the thickness of soil humus layer from 13 cm to 15 cm, reduced the humus layer soil bulk density to 1.29 cm3/g. Ryegrass tilled and returned to the field increased soil organic matter content by 6.89-7.92%, increased rhizosphere soil available phosphorus content by 2.22-17.96%, and converted the soil non-exchangeable potassium into potassium that was available for plant absorption and utilization. Ryegrass tilling and returning to the field increased the potassium content of middle leaves of flue-cured tobacco by 7.69-10.07%, the increased potassium content in flue-cured tobacco was accompanied by increased total sugar, reducing sugar, and the ratio of reducing sugar to nicotine, which facilitated the harmonization of the chemical composition of cured tobacco leaves. Moreover, the increased number of markedly improved operational taxonomic units enhanced the complexity of the soil bacterial community and its compactness after ryegrass tillage and their return to the field. The available potassium, available phosphorus, total potassium content, pH, and sampling period of the rhizosphere soil had considerable effects on the rhizosphere microbial. Ryegrass tilling and returning to the field changed the soil microbiome, which increased the abundance of bulk soil Proteobacteria, rhizosphere soil Fibrobacterota, and microbes with anti-pathogen activity (Lysobacteria, Sphingomonas, Chaetomium, and Minimedusa); and reduced the abundance of pathogenic fungi Neocosmospore genus in the soil. In brief, ryegrass returned to the field, improved soil microecology and restored soil nutrients, and established a new dynamic balance of soil ecology, thereby improving the quality of cultivated land and the quality of flue-cured tobacco.

Changes in some physical properties of the soils tread with wheat straw and rice husk under the rotation of white-head cabbage, tomato and wheat

This study was carried out silty clay (SiC) textured soil and silty land (SiL) textured soil in order to reveal the changes in some physical properties of the soil in white-head cabbage (WHC), tomato (T) and wheat (W) rotation after the application of wheat straw (WS) and rice husk (RH). Soil organic matter (OM), bulk density (BD), total porosity (F), aggregate stability (AS), mean weight diameter (MWD), field capacity (FC), volumetric water content (Ɵ), penetration resistance (PR), relative saturation (RS) and initial infiltration (In) values were determined, after harvest of each plant. As the results of the experiments pointed out, soil OM contents and F values increased, while BD values decreased after WHC, T and W harvest with WS and RH application. With a higher C/N ratio, WS application increased soil OM content more than RH application. The lowest BD, AS, and MWD values were generally obtained after the WHC and T harvest, and the highest BD, AS, PR and in values after the W harvest. Soil OM content showed very significant negative relationships with BD (-0.561**), MWD (-0.680**) and RS (-0.528**) in the silty clay (SiC) textured soils, while it showed very significant negative relationships with BD (-0.809**), AS (-0.543**), MWD (-0.830**), PR (-0.555**) and very significant positive relationships with FC (0.728**), Ɵ (0.814**), RS (0.767**) in the silty loam (SiL) textured soils.

Changes in selected properties of Calcic Chernozem due to cultivation of Robinia pseudoacacia and Quercus robur

Abstract The results of a comprehensive study on the particle size distribution, soil organic matter (SOM) content, and plant-available water in Calcic Chernozem are presented, along with the impact of Robinia pseudoacacia L. and Quercus robur L. plantations on these indicators. The study revealed that Calcic Chernozem under steppe vegetation and Q. robur plantation exhibited a silty clay loam texture. However, under the influence of R. pseudoacacia plantation, the chernozem’s texture transformed into loam. The planting of R. pseudoacacia resulted in a noticeable decrease in SOM content, while the growth of Q. robur plantations led to an increase in SOM content. Furthermore, both R. pseudoacacia and Q. robur plantations contributed to an increased content of plant-available water in the 0–20 cm layer of chernozem. These findings highlight the more pronounced effect of R. pseudoacacia plantation on the particle size distribution, SOM content, and plant-available water in Calcic Chernozem compared to Q. robur plantation.

Pinpointing the distinctive impacts of ten cover crop species on the resident and active fractions of the soil microbiome

Cover crops are used in agriculture to minimize soil erosion, prevent nutrient leaching and increase soil organic matter content. Cover crops can also be grown to stimulate the soil microbial community to improve soil biological conditions. Despite their widespread use, little is known about the impact of different cover crop species on the composition and activity of the soil microbiome. Here we investigate the effect of distinct cover crop species on the rhizosphere microbiome and characterize both the resident (ribosomal (r)DNA-based) and the potentially active (rRNA-based) fractions of the bacterial, fungal, protist and metazoan communities in the cover crops rhizosphere. We conducted a field experiment using 70-l bottomless containers in which we grew ten monocultures of commonly used cover crop species belonging to five plant families, and an unplanted control treatment (fallow). The total DNA and RNA were extracted from soil and the bacterial, fungal, protistan and metazoan communities were characterized using Illumina MiSeq sequencing. We found that all cover crop species significantly impacted the resident and the potentially active microbial communities in their rhizospheres. Cover crops exerted distinct selection strengths on the native microbial communities. For individual cover crops, the impacts on the resident and the potentially active microbial communities differed while showing similar overall tendencies. Oilseed radish (Brassicaceae) was shown to provoke the strongest microbial shifts, in part attributable to a promotion of the bacterial family Pseudomonadaceae and a repression of Microascaceae in the rhizosphere. Lentil (Fabaceae) induced a widespread stimulation of fungal taxa, including Trichocomaceae and fungal members of the Glomerales order, whereas black oat and hybrid ryegrass (both Poaceae) gave rise to relatively mild changes in the soil microbial communities. Analyses of rRNA-based rhizobiome data revealed that, except for phacelia, all cover crops induced an increase in microbial network complexity as compared to the fallow control. Data presented here provide a broad baseline for the effects of cover crops on four organismal groups, which may facilitate future cover crop selection to advance soil health.

Effects of fermented and supplemented chicken manure on the nutrient management aspects of an apple orchard

AIt is a huge challenge for farmers worldwide to successfully increase the organic matter content of their soils and improve their water balance at the same time. Therefore, the main aim of the study is to develop and test organic-based nutrient composite materials that can be successfully used by farmers to increase soil organic matter content, improve water management parameters and implement water-efficient technologies. The study was performed in the orchard of the Institute of Horticultural Science of the University of Debrecen in Hungary (Debrecen-Pallag). The experiment was set up in a ten-year-old apple (Malus domestica ‘Pinova’) orchard. In the trial, fermented poultry manure and superabsorbent polymers (SAP) were used at different doses to study their effects on soil properties and fruit quality. Applied composite materials increased the nitrate and organic nitrogen content of the soil. Treatments did not affect the sugar content of the fruits but significantly and positively affected the individual fruit weight and the titratable acidity of the fruits.

Effect of Chicken Manure Fermentation Extract as an Alternative to Chemical Fertilizer on Cucumber Growth and Soil Microbiome Environment

ABSTRACT In recent years, the destruction of the soil environment caused by excessive application of chemical fertilizers has attracted attention to using organic fertilizers to replace chemical fertilizers. Previous studies have shown that chicken manure fermentation extract (CMFE) as an organic fertilizer may also directly influence soil nutrient availability from the soil native pool and fertilizer application. However, it is unclear whether application CMFE can partially replacing chemical fertilizer to reduce the amount of chemical fertilizer without reducing cucumber yield. Therefore, an experiment was conducted in Yantai Agricultural Science Academy of Shandong Province in 2018 and 2019. In 2018, five fertilization combinations were set up, namely CK (900 kg·ha−1 chemical fertilizer), T1 (750 kg·ha−1 chemical fertilizer +150 L·ha−1 CMFE), T2 (675 kg·ha−1 chemical fertilizer +225 L·ha−1 CMFE), T3 (600 kg·ha−1 chemical fertilizer +300 L·ha−1 CMFE) and T4 (525 kg·ha−1 chemical fertilizer +375 L·ha−1 CMFE). Selected the optimal combination T3 for testing in 2019. The yield, quality, photosynthesis and growth indicators of cucumber, as well as soil nutrients and microbial content were determined. The results showed that the fertilization combination of 600 kg·ha−1 chemical fertilizer +300 L·ha−1 CMFE (T3) can minimize the amount of chemical fertilizer used without reducing yield. Compared with conventional fertilizer application, CMFE partially replacing chemical fertilizer did not reduce cucumber yield, but significantly increased cucumber vitamin C and protein content. CMFE partially replacing chemical fertilizer increased the root to shoot ratio as well as the fresh and dry weight of vegetative organs in cucumber, optimizing the growth and development of cucumber. Compared with conventional fertilizer application, CMFE partially replacing chemical fertilizer increased the content of soil organic matter, improved the composition structure of soil microbial community, increased the relative abundance of Actinomycete and Acinetobacter, and reduced the relative abundance of Bacteroides, Ascomycota, and Basidiomycetes. Overall, CMFE partially replacing chemical fertilizer optimized the growth and development of cucumbers, increased the root to shoot ratio, increased soil organic matter content, increased microbial abundance and diversity, and improved the composition structure of soil microbial communities. Therefore, in order to reduce the use of fertilizers, it is recommended to partially replacing chemical fertilizers with CMFE, with the optimal combination of 600 kg·ha−1 chemical fertilizer +300 L·ha−1 CMFE (T3).

Exploring options for increasing maize yields and grain Zn concentrations in sub-Saharan Africa

BackgroundIncreasing zinc (Zn) concentrations in maize grains could contribute to alleviating widespread human Zn deficiency in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). However, trade-offs between grain Zn concentrations and maize yields have been observed.ScopeUsing data from researcher-managed, on-farm and on-station field trials in Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe, we aimed (i) to confirm whether this trade-off is found in current farming systems in SSA and (ii) to explore whether genotypic and management options, relevant for the African context, can increase both yields and grain Zn concentrations across several environments.ResultsAn overall negative, but weak relation between maize yields and grain Zn concentrations was found. High yields and high grain Zn concentrations did not co-occur. The negative relation between grain Zn concentrations and yields cannot be bypassed by selecting one of the commercially available varieties used in this study. Nitrogen application increased yields, but had contrasting effects on grain Zn concentrations depending on variety and site. Grain Zn concentrations were positively related with soil organic carbon and P and K availability.ConclusionsAttaining grain Zn concentrations above the HarvestPlus target of 38 mg kg−1, considered adequate for reducing human Zn deficiency, with current commercially available maize varieties and presented management options, is not possible without compromising yield levels. Increasing soil organic matter content and balanced application of N, P and K fertilisers could increase grain Zn concentrations. These practices likely will also increase yields and could be a viable option to bypass the trade-off between maize yields and grain Zn concentrations.

Long term influence of alternative corn cropping practices and corn-hay rotations on soil health, yields and forage quality

Modifications to continuous corn production systems can reduce environmental impacts and soil degradation, yet the social viability of these modifications is linked to the degree to which they also influence yields and crop quality. In this study, we focus on forage production systems and evaluate how yields, crop quality, soil health indicators, and associated ecosystem services are influenced by corn-hay rotation treatments, cover cropping, and tillage reduction in silage production using a unique 10-year dataset from Borderview Research Farm in Vermont, United States. Physical, chemical, and biological soil health indicators were monitored annually alongside yields and crop quality in a randomized complete block design experiment. We use a mixed model analysis of variance approach to demonstrate significant influences of time and treatments on yields, crop quality and soil health parameters (at p &amp;lt; 0.05). The winter rye cover crop treatment had no significant influence in this study. No-till significantly increased aggregate stability and had no significant effect on other metrics. When cover crop and no-till were combined, they significantly increased soil organic matter content, respiration and aggregate stability. The cover crop, no-till, and no-till cover crop combination treatments had no significant effect on yields or forage quality, suggesting these conservation practices can be adopted without sacrificing yields. Our study also found that corn-hay rotations can significantly increase soil organic matter, respiration, aggregate stability, and crude protein content compared to continuous corn, but they can negatively influence active carbon, total dry matter yield and digestibility. The length of rotation influences the degree to which corn-hay rotations maintain or reduce yields when compared to continuous corn. Shorter rotations of perennial forages (4 years of hay, 6 years of corn) can sustain dry matter yields that are not significantly different from continuous corn, but longer perennial forage rotations (8 years of hay, 2 years of corn) will significantly reduce overall dry matter yields. Among the treatments, no-till in combination with cover cropping in corn silage fields, and a rotation of 4 years of hay to 6 years of corn are likely to achieve the greatest overall benefits in forage production systems.

Field performance of sweet sorghum in salt-affected soils in China: A quantitative synthesis

Sweet sorghum is a high-yield crop with strong resistance, which has the potential to support the development of the forage farming industry in China where vast salt-affected lands are potentially arable. Nutrient management is imperative for sweet sorghum growing on salt-affected lands. Although nitrogen (N) synthetic fertilizers have long been recognized as a key factor for increasing crop yields, their effects on sweet sorghum cultivation are under debate. Consequently, this study integrated the current available observations of yield (n = 255) and partial factor productivity of nitrogen (NPFP, n = 242) of sweet sorghum in salt-affected lands, which included both inland (n = 189) and coastal (n = 66) areas. We quantitatively analyzed the effects of climatic, soil properties and management measures on biomass yield and NPFP of sweet sorghum, comparing the differences between inland and coastal salt-affected lands. We found that average biomass yield and NPFP of sweet sorghum in coastal areas were 19,082.48 ± 8262.75 kg/ha and 107.29 ± 51.44 kg/kg respectively, both significantly lower than that in inland areas (p < 0.05). The N application rate did not have significant promoting effect on the biomass yield of sweet sorghum in inland salt-affected areas (p > 0.05), whereas in coastal salt-affected areas, N application significantly increased the biomass yield of sweet sorghum. Increasing soil organic matter content could promote NPFP in inland areas. The recommended N application rate for inland salt-affected and coastal salt-affected areas were 100 kg/ha and 150 kg/ha respectively. The results indicate that it is crucial to apply nutrient management measures based on the local climatic and soil conditions, since the causes of salinity differ in coastal and inland salt-affected lands. More systematic field studies are required in the future to optimize the management of water and nutrients for sweet sorghum planting in salt-affected lands.

Effects of biochar on the transformation of cadmium fractions in alkaline soil

To investigate the chemical properties in the biochar-mediated transformation of soil cadmium (Cd) fractions, the effects of biochar applied at different pyrolysis temperatures on soil Cd-fractions, pH value, and soil organic matter (SOM) were studied through an in-lab incubation experiment on contaminated soil. The results showed that the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) of CsBC300 (biochar prepared at 300 °C) was significantly higher (up to 1.31 times) than that of CsBC600 (biochar prepared at 600 °C). However, CsBC600 was more aromatic. Due to the difference in pyrolysis temperatures, the Cd deactivation mechanism of CsBC300 and CsBC600 was mainly to provide a large amount of organic matter and aromatic functional groups to the soil, respectively. The addition of these two biochar types significantly reduced the acid-extracted Cd content, by 76.56–83.52% and 70.48–76.81%, respectively. Contrastingly, it increased the residual Cd content by 2.26–2.36 and 2.08–2.29 times, respectively, which promoted the Cd transformation from the unstable to the stable state. However, CsBC300 had slightly better deactivation effect than CsBC600 on the 120th day, which was due to the decrease of soil pH and the increased SOM content. These study results can provide a theoretical reference for the remediation of Cd-contaminated alkaline soil.
